Deacons ...

Greenacres Congregational Church

At the heart of the life of our Church is the Church Meeting. Church Members are expected to play a full role in the life of the Church by contributing at Church Meetings.

For the day-to-day running of the Church the Deacons take an active hands-on role.

Deacons have a varied role in the life of a Congregational Church - following on from the model described in the New Testament:

Acts 6
Seven Chosen to Serve
As the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food.
So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.”
Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch. These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them.
So God’s message continued to spread and the number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem.

At Greenacres our Deacons meet monthly to discuss the business matters of the Church. They also take a lead role in the many responsibilities of Church life. A Deacon is elected to serve a four year term of office at the Annual General Church Meeting and needs to have been a Church Member for at least 12 months before seeking election. At Greenacres we have a maximum of 12 deacons.
